Want to try Kombucha but have been scared by Kombucha girl? Many have been! Kombucha may be a fermented tea drink but in our opinion it can (and does in the case of Equinox), taste delicious! We focus a lot of our Kombucha alchemy on creating interesting and downright tasty flavour combinations so that people who would never normally reach for a health drink are delighted when they taste one of ours! So, if you’re kombucha curious and interested in what it tastes like, look no further. We’re here to give you a completely unbiased (ish) guide on what kombucha tastes like.
First thing’s first, it’s “unique”.
Don’t expect a sugary sweet drink or something overly spiced. Kombucha has a very distinctive taste; the taste is a perfect balance between acidic, fragrant and fruity, depending on the flavour you choose. It’s very different from your standard soft drink and much more versatile pure or as a mixer, which is what makes it such an exciting, tongue-tantalising experience.
It also has a distinctive smell…
The fermented element of the drink is what gives kombucha its fizz, beneficial acids and slightly vinegary smell, which while noticeable, is not unpleasant (we believe!). Those vinegar notes are probably the first thing you will notice, but don’t let it put you off, the taste is very different from the smell which is why it engages all your senses (and generally tastes better than it smells)!
What about the ‘bits’?
You may also notice a few odd-looking bits floating in your kombucha. Don’t fear – this is the magical SCOBY (symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast) that brings all the good for you bacteria! Not only are the SCOBY ‘bits’ completely normal and safe to consume but as many kids have told us, they give you gut health super powers! Our kombucha is 100% raw and unpasteurised, which means that often a new SCOBY will form in the drink after it’s been bottled. Worry not, it’s just the live bacteria doing it’s thing
How do others describe the taste?
Kombucha has a very complex flavour profile and tastes slightly different to everyone. We asked our followers and fellow booch lovers how they would describe the taste in 3 words, which generated some amazing responses, from ‘fizzy, zingy and tangy’ and ‘sparkly, punchy and refreshing’ to ‘crisp, slick and sophisticated’, and our personal favourite: ‘sparkly unicorn champagne’.
The ‘zingy’ or ‘tangy’ part comes from the natural fermentation process, where the sugars are broken down with the SCOBY to create the natural fizz in your drink. This, blended with the natural flavour of green tea are what make the ‘base’ flavour of our kombucha. We then blend with other ingredients to create the delicious flavour combinations, including ginger, pink grapefruit, turmeric and raspberry.
Our kombucha tastes pretty good, and we’re not the only ones who think so…
We’re very proud to have been awarded several ‘Great Taste’ awards for our kombucha, and our master brewers are very proud!
