It seems as though everyone has just realised how incredible fermented food and drinks are. But do you know your kefir from your kombucha?
Fermented food and drinks
Kefir and kombucha are both fermented soft drinks that pack a punch when it comes to health benefits. The biggest difference between them is that kefir is usually dairy-based (although there are some vegan options available) while kombucha is usually tea-based.
They’re both fermented which means they’re full of probiotics – good stuff that’s good for gut stuff. But just when you think you finally understand what’s what when it comes to kefir and kombucha, someone throws in the curveball that is kimchi.
Kimchi is more like the weird cousin in the fermented family. It’s made using lactic acid bacteria and it’s been used for thousands of years to preserve vegetables. So you won’t find it in the soft drinks aisle, but it’s certainly part of the huge fermented foods movement.
Other popular fermented food and drinks include:
- Sauerkraut
- Sourdough
- Miso
- Yoghurt
Health benefits of fermented food & drinks
And this looks like a movement that’s here to stay. Fermented foods aren’t just a fad because they have genuine health benefits, which include aiding digestion, supporting the immune system and boosting the availability of important vitamins and minerals. And the UK market is now beginning to see just how beneficial they are. So while this growing sector might look like a trend, this is a trend that will still be on the shelves in years to come!
